The civil association LBGT Rights and the party Movimiento Ciudadano have presented an initiative in the Congress of Mexico City to safeguard the health and physical integrity of companion animals and those used in agriculture. This proposal seeks to amend the Animal Protection and Welfare Law of CDMX and promote responsible breeding.
In a press conference, legislator Patricia Urriaza Arellano explained that the initiative aims to prevent the use of methods that affect the genetic or physical traits of animals unless there is a veterinary medical justification. Urriaza gave examples such as bulldogs, which are modified to maintain certain characteristics, like the shape of their legs.
"We firmly believe that this modification to the Animal Protection and Welfare Law of Mexico City, which considers this type of selective breeding as mistreatment, is necessary and cannot continue to occur," stated the legislator.
The president of LBGT Rights Mexico, Enrique Vives, highlighted that the initiative aims to prevent harmful actions, such as raising sentient beings in cramped spaces to maintain a certain size, the use of ear holders for aesthetic reasons, or treatments that may cause kidney and cardiac damage. Additionally, Vives warned about mistreatment in agricultural animals, which affects their growth and limits their reproductive existence, causing health problems such as kidney failure in pigs and birds.
"Selective breeding that compromises the health and physical well-being of animals can cause serious problems such as heart diseases, excessive fattening, and respiratory issues, which can even lead to death," concluded the activist. This initiative underscores the importance of protecting animals and promoting breeding practices that respect their well-being.
